Stars in a Jar

Earlier this week I read about a great reward system for kids from one of the blogs I frequent, A Thoughtful Place. Her system Gems in a Jar, seemed like the perfect fit for what I was looking for.

Rather than buy gems, I used some star ice cubes I already had on hand along with a vase and glass. The only items I bought were for the “treasure chest” which holds the prizes…all prizes are under $2-3.

The reward system is simple…each time a kid follows directions, does something nice or out of the ordinary they get to put a star (or gem or whatever) in their jar. You could even take away stars if you were having a bad behavior day.

When ten stars are in the jar they can pick something out of the “treasurer chest.” My treasure includes bubbles, jewelry, candy, paints, small craft projects, stickers, etc. there isn’t much now, but will accumulate stuff over time.

When the idea was introduced at our house there was lots of excitement…we shall see how it goes!

Thanks for the idea A Thoughtful Place!
