Tuesday night my BFF Cynthia and I, along with another friend headed to downtown Iowa City for a book reading…and free pie!

Author and Iowa native Beth Howard, was starting the first leg of the tour for her book, Making Piece: A Memoir of Love, Loss, and Pie, in Iowa City at our local bookstore on Tuesday night. Beth, through a series of events detailed in her book, followed her roots back to Iowa and now lives in the American Gothic house and runs the Pitchfork Pie Stand down in the little town of Eldon, IA. You can read all about Beth and her pie mission on her blog, The World Needs More Pie or her website.

She speaks very candidly (in person and in the book) about the journey that led her to the book and her hope is that others find comfort and healing in pie, and her book, the way she did. I’m anxious to start reading it and a little bit more motivated to master making my own crust now…maybe this will be my year of pie!
